I was so excited to connect with Sommer Rae, to feature as my author of the month! With her first book Hollow: Into The Veil, Part One. already available and her second book launching on August 31st, be sure to check her out!
What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve been writing since I was a teen, but a recent mental health crisis sent me into a year-long instability. I began writing again as a way to cope, picking up old stories here and there, until one just clicked.
How has writing changed your life?
What began as a simple bucket list ‘check mark’, slowly turned from a coping skill to something I really enjoyed out of life. I’ve never been able to make myself do things, even in crisis. However, I can make myself write.
Tell me about your upcoming book.
Inferno: Into The Veil, Part Two
The thrilling sequel to Hollow: Into The Veil, Part One.
Inferno really dives into the aftermath. Sure, there's a happily ever after, but...What happens then? What happens to those traumatized by the first novel’s events?
What happens to our heroine, hero and friends next? Will their lives finally be peaceful, or will they have to endure another journey while dealing with the past?
Inferno follows Mira, Raytheon and friends again as they battle for their lives, and their happiness.
What inspired you to write this book?
I didn’t feel like my initial story was done, when I was in the middle of Hollow, I knew the plot for Inferno rather quickly. I also wanted to address some comments from beta readers and reviewers- I knew I could do better. So once Hollow was released, I immediately began work on Inferno.
In 10 words or less, how would your best friend describe you?
“The purest of hearts with equal love for everyone.”
What non-writing accomplishment are you most proud of?
Adopting two wonderful children and blessed enough to be ‘Bonus-Mom’ to a third. Though, they are all 100% precious and 100% mine. <3
How do you take your coffee?
I hate coffee, personally. Haha. I love tea, though.
Horror or rom-com?
I personally love a good Horror/Romance or even Horror/Musical. My favorite film examples of this are Crimson Peak and Repo! The Genetic Opera.
If you were an animal, which animal would you be, and why?
I would love to be an owl. Their beauty, wisdom and spiritual energy all speak to me on a deep level. I often see them around in nature, dreams, and symbolism.
If you could spend the day with someone famous (alive or dead) who would you pick and why?
First that comes to mind is David Bowie. He is my childhood/teenage crush from my favorite film of all time: Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. I would give anything to be taken to brunch by the Goblin King, haha.
Kids, pets or both?
I love and have both! Two boys and a girl, two dogs, a cat, and a snake!
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
The best advice I know of and follow actually came from a film, and it’s very cheesy. The quote is “Have courage, and be kind” from the new live-action Cinderella.
I have it split up and tattooed on my wrists with a semicolon, and well- If you know, you know. I always love the reminder to have courage, and not only be kind to everyone you meet, but be kind to yourself.
Favorite book and why?
My favorite book is A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. I adore the strong heroine, the attractive and lovable characters and the in-depth story telling. This sequel is my favorite book in the entire series, but I would highly recommend any of her novels.
