Folklore, Magic & Creative Renewal

March is a month that straddles the threshold between seasons - a held breath before winter loosens his grip and spring raises her head. In folklore across Europe and the British Isles, March was seen as a time of awakening, the slow gentle process of coming alive - before the urgency of action. March is a time of stirring, without rushing, a time when the world whispers rather than shouts.

The Celts believed March winds carried messages from the Otherworld. Norse traditions saw March as the season when the earth goddess began to shake off the cobwebs from her winter rest. In old English weather lore, March was the month of “quickening,” when the land began to pulse with life again, branches thought dead breaking into tender buds.

And yet it is still cold. Still dark. Still uncertain. There is an element of fragile hope, and patient expectation, even when those last flurries coat houses in white and smoke continues to curl from the chiminies.

This is the magic of March: it teaches us that awakening doesn’t have to be immediate. It can be slow, soft, and in its own perfect time

The Energy of Early Spring

March carries a unique energy — not the bright, bursting growth of April or May, but something quieter. Something subtle.

It’s the energy of:

  • a luxurious stretch after a long nap
  • curling cold hands around a warm mug
  • listening to the first returning birds sing
  • feeling the stirring spark of creativity

This is the perfect time for rituals that focus on gentle renewalcreative reawakening, and soft beginnings

A Ritual for Reawakening

Looking to bring a touch of the old world into your modern life? Hungry for a touch of the sacred sprinkled in the harried mundane of our tech heavy world? Me too. Take a moment to connect to your roots - the old roots, the roots that run deep into the earth and connect us power and peace we may have forgotten.

Gather:

  • A quiet moment
  • A candle (white, green, or gold)
  • A bowl of warm water
  • A sprig of something living

1. Light your candle.  Let the flame represent the returning sun.

2. Dip your fingers into the warm water.  Imagine the warmth melting whatever has felt frozen inside you.

3. Hold your sprig of green.  Whisper:

“I awaken gently. I return slowly. I rise in my own time.”

4. Place the sprig beside the candle.  Let it dry in the warmth.

This ritual isn’t about productivity or pressure. It’s about permission — permission to begin again, in a new season, in the delicate new light - softly.

A Blessing for March

May your creativity stretch like a limb waking from sleep.

May your courage return in small, steady breaths.

May you remember that beginnings don’t need to be loud — only honest.
