Introduction

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bear Hunters has been around for centuries. We heard it as children, we may have told it to children of our own, but the message and lessons can be more adult than many realize with the first telling.

Don’t break into strangers’ homes.

If you are a bear, maybe don’t leave your door unlocked.

Home invasion can be very upsetting.

Something will always be too hard, or too soft, but if you keep going, you might find something that is just right!

As I did for Snow White in the Snow Series, I am taking a very adult perspective and peeling back the layers of a childhood story to find and explore the themes from a completely different vantage point.

Rereading Classic Fairytales

When I decided that I wanted to write an erotic story, I was unsure where to start. My first few attempts (which may still see the light of day sometime in the future) landed as WIPs about a haunted young woman and a power-obsessed businesswoman on the hunt for the ultimate sexual awakening.

Then I got stuck.

I wasn’t sure how these stories would play out, and I needed to overcome one of my biggest challenges - I struggle to finish things.

So I took a detour.

Literally.

I stepped into one of the best bookstores I know ,and wandered aimlessly through the shelves until I spotted the innocuous -but beautiful - copy of The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm.

I flipped through the pages and the answer nearly slapped me in the face.

The most impactful erotica I have ever read was the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice, so why not explore some other fairytale-inspired erotica, and see where it would take me.

As you well know, fair reader, it took me down a dark and steamy road through the Snow White fairytale.

I enjoyed the reverse harem angle so much, that I wracked my brain for another situation of 3 or more men in a single fairytale, and the first thing that came to mind? You guessed it. Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

I’ve never written a shifter story and was not looking to branch that far out - exploring the needs of both animal and man when it comes to sex and power, love and relationships. So, I took a hard detour and am now finishing up the first draft of Goldilocks and the Three Bear Hunters. It is dark, it is vicious, it is violent and it is oh, so steamy.

Now, if I can just get around to finishing it…

Getting out of my own way

The first step to being creative is getting out of your own way.

I’ve heard this 1000 times. I may have even said it 1000 times - my sister is an artist and a perfectionist, so watching her struggle waiting for things to be perfect enough left me in a very powerful (if painful place). I learned vicariously - done is always better than perfect.

I know I need to take risks. I have to put on my big girl panties, risk the wrath of the haters, the whiners, the people who think I am destroying the memories of their youth, and more to just tell a sexy story.

I need to get ambitious, instead of quitting after 5 books, I need to push forward. This will be the longest single book I have written (or darn close!) and it might be even more taboo to unpack a nursery rhyme than a fairytale. We will see…

I'll be planning to launch in 2023... stay tuned for more deets.

The only way I will keep making progress and keep working towards my dream of taking my stories to the world is by setting goals - tiny teeny goals - and knocking them off one by one.

Writing sex

I am often asked about writing sex.

Is it difficult to write good sex scenes?

Why do you write so much sex?

How do you keep it moving the story forward?

Writing sex is not always easy, especially if you're a writer who's nervous or shy about it.

As someone who lives with one foot planted firmly in sex-positivity and one toe still tied to societal norms of femininity, shame, fear of being marked promiscuous, or worse, this can be an ongoing battle.

Stories I admire most host women who own their sexuality and see it as a powerful, important, loving, and potentially even spiritual event. These women hold space for those of us still struggling to find our voice, our path, or our way.

My intention is to write great sex. If I do it well, it can be one of the most satisfying, most important, most impactful parts of the story. It can teach others that you don’t learn everything you need to know about sex in sex ed - nor from porn! It can be about pleasure, love, connection, lust, power, release, or simple enjoyment. It can be a way to connect with someone, a way to connect with yourself, or a moment just to revel in the miracle that is your body, designed for pleasure and joy.

The key for me is to make sure that when people read what I’ve written about sex and love, they feel as though they really know those characters—that they have lived through them and seen their emotions, choices, and actions played out on paper in either a relatable or inspirational way.

Work in Progress

So I am in the thick of working on this new project, and it's going to be amazing. I can't wait to share it with you!

Conclusion

Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed this exploration of my thoughts and process behind the upcoming Goldilocks and the Three Bear Hunters.

We know how prevalent and relevant today folk tales, fairytales, and nursery rhymes are today, and by exploring the ways they might be interpreted through different lenses - including very adult themes of pleasure, sex, and violence, we can see how these ancient stories can build the foundation on which to build new tales.
