Do you love the idea of hot and dangerous monsters searching for their human mates? Does the idea of an underwater romance leave you steaming at the collar? Then you have to give The Merman's Kiss by Tamsin Ley a read!
Author's Blurb
A sexy, sleek-tailed monster.
Zantu has evaded the mate-bond for thirty-five years, dodging promiscuous mermaids with vile intents. Unlike mermaids, mermen bond for life, and Zantu refuses to accept the heartbreak most mermen die of. That is, until the glint of gold catches his eye, and a simple salvage mission turns to passion. Now he’s bonded to a human.
A woman looking for a reason to live.
Briana thinks her life is over after the loss of her child. Instead, she falls into the arms of a merman who is anything but cold-blooded. He’s wild, seductive, and sets her blood on fire every time he touches her, and soon she begins to need him for more than his magic to breathe underwater. He might just give her a new purpose.
But as dangers encroach from every side, Zantu must choose; keep his new mate at his side or keep her safe.
Either way, he’s sure he’ll end up with a broken heart.
What I loved about this book...
Can you say steamy?! Tamsin Ley takes you on a wild adventurous ride so fantastical that you almost forget that mermen don’t exist. The contrast of mermen and mermaids in her stories creates a tangible culture of these beings that makes the heart ache for the doomed mermen. Our heroine is likeable and tragic in a beautiful, heartbreaking way, and you cannot help but get swept away by the passion and intensity of the MCs interactions.
The characters are intriguing, the sex hot as hell, the connection between our couple sweet and steamy, the world that Leypaints beautiful and ethereal.
What I didn’t love so much...
The pace of the book was a little too fast. Often the scenes felt rushed, or incredibly short as we were whisked from one event to the next. Some of the characters were introduced without the time to get to know or like them, though I later learned they each have their own books, if you are wanting to read more. The damsel in distress moments would have been cliché, but Ley pulls it out of the bag with a rescue mission gone horribly - and satisfyingly - right.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for pure escapism, with a heady dose of fantasy heat. If you are looking for a reason to love fairytale creatures, this book does not disappoint. Short and quick, The Merman’s Kiss is easily consumable, with the promise of additional books - if you are so inclined - but a satisfying stand alone read if you are looking for a one-and-done adult bedtime story. Ley delivers with a true HEA and mushy goodness offset by scenes that will fog up your glasses and have you risking your Kindle in the bathtub.
