Today's Prompt:

Create a monster.

Kaylen laid his head down and turned his cheek into his mother’s warm, vanilla scented kiss.
“G’night, bunny,” she whispered into his ear, tickling his neck with his hair and making him smile.

“G’night, Tater Tot,” he giggled into the collecting shadows as she turned off his bedside light. Half the room was doused in blue half light from the full moon peering in his window,

Mom reached across him and switched off the second light and tucking the blankets under his body. With a final quick press of her lips to his brow. She straightened and headed for the door. Kaylen watched and held his breath as she put her hand on the doorknob and pulled it behind her.
“Don’t close it, don’t close it, don’t close it...” he begged silently, his breath burning in his lungs, his teeth grit tight together.

He couldn’t ask anymore, not since his dad – well, his stepdad, Ella’s dad-dad- had sat him down for one of his famous Man to Man chats, and said, “You know, sport, now that Ella’s almost one year old, your mom and I are going to be away a little more, and might need you to help out. Put your toys away, help put dishes in the kitchen, that kind of thing. What do you say, buddy? Do you think you can do that?”

Kaylen swelled in his t-shirt, feeling very grown up and powerful in that moment. He kicked his legs off the edge of the bench and nodded fiercely at his dad. His dad had ruffled his hair as he stood. “Oh, and you might have to start sleeping with the door shut, okay tough guy?”

Kaylen had frozen. With a closed door? Dear god, didn’t dad understand what that meant? How did he not know about the door rule? Door open a crack keeps monsters back. Kaylen thought everyone knew that.

His first dad, had whispered it to him the night he left, leaving the door open a crack so Kaylen could watch him pick up two suitcases from inside the front door, turn back to look up the stairs to his mom’s bedroom, then slowly turning to look straight at Kaylen, before walking out into the rain.

Kaylen shuddered as he watched the pyramid of golden hall light get smaller and smaller as his mom backed up. Kaylen heard Dad’s deep voice rumble down the hall, turning his mom’s head. She laughed, and Kaylen bit his lip.

Don’t beg. Don’t scream. He waited, watched, time slowed down and stopped as he stared. Smaller and smaller. The light dimmed, as the door swung shut then closed with a thunderous snap. Kaylen’s breath shot out of him in a rush, then he gasped and choked as his head swiveled around the room, waiting, watching. Any second now. A tentacle, a claw, a tail would sweep from under his bed and grab him.

Any second now. His body shook against the tension in his muscles. His teeth chattered in his jaw.

Annnny second now.

Still-ill he waited.

His breathing slowed. His muscles relaxed. He huffed a sigh of relief and let his eyelids close a little bit.

When a clawed arm, a sunset purple, with dark indigo stripes lashed out from under the bed and grabbed hold of one leg. Kaylen pulled in a lungful of air to scream, when the monster flung itself out from under the bed, twirling like a contortionist in midair and landing on top of Kaylen.

It pressed down on Kaylen’s feet with its own clawed, unnervingly prehensile toes, his left arm with one clawed hand, and clamped the other hand over Kaylen’s mouth, choking off his scream before the sound could carry. Kaylen noticed his other and was also held down. He twisted to see if the creature had 5 arms and started struggling when he saw a tail with a forked end twirled and flexing against his small wrist.

His eyes snapped straight ahead again and Kaylen caught the keen, wide eyed gaze of the creature perched on top of him. The shadows were thickest just across its face, but its eyes were luminous. As big as tennis balls, but curved to almond shaped points at the corners, they shone like polished jade in ebony lined sockets. It blinked and Kaylen forgot to scream. One large milky Lense slid over the creature’s eye sideways first, like a sliding door before the upper and lower lids slid together. Then the process reversed and the creature was again staring at Kaylen. Kaylen noticed it had no eyelashes, its eye lids covered in iridescent scales that shone in the meager light.

It shifted, pushing its face closer to Kaylen’s. Moonlight reflecting from a mirror cast a perfect round spotlight onto the monster’s face as it leaned in, peering closely at Kaylen.

It had a pert nose, more like a hedgehog than a human, with thin lips and a pointed chin below the jade green globes of her eyes. Her hair more closely resembled fur, that circled her face, covering her throat, and growing in a point down between her eyes.

Scales that flashed and glowed in the moonlight covered her eyelids, covering her cheekbones, and running up onto the side of her head lay side by side with long fur spotted with feathers. She didn’t seem to be wearing clothes, but her scales, fur and feathers seemed to grow into a deranged outfit of sorts.

Kaylen glanced down and noticed the line of the tale curving from her spine, its origin hidden behind one hip and she loomed above him.

She eased the pressure on his mouth, gentle lifting her hand. Kaylen wiggled his face, stretching out his mouth and lips after being squished for so long. Cautiously the creature raised her hand to her face, then extended one finger and pressed it to her lips.

“Shhhh...” she hissed. Her breath smelled like sage or rosemary, it was warm and pleasant on Kaylen’s face and he nodded his head in agreement. He stared up at the creature and realized he was not afraid. Not at all. This creature was beautiful and fascinating and he needed to know more.

It slowly backed away from him, releasing each arm and leg cautiously, in slow succession as if afraid he would lash out at them. Kaylen took his time standing up, watching the creatures graceful body twist and move like his gecko, Kevin

“... have been... so long... too many...” Kaylen threw himself to the ground, hands clamped over his ears as his brain screamed with static and words that echoed and smashed around in his head.

“Ooooooh... Sorrrrries...” The creature moaned through thin lips. Kaylen pulled his hands from his ears and looked around. The noise in his brain was gone, along with the echo and he was thrust again into his normal spinning thoughts.
