“If a story is in you, it has to come out.”

—William Faulkner

Welcome back! I hope yesterday was satisfying for you. If it was a struggle, do not worry! These things get easier with practice. Keep going! And with that said, let's get into it...

Today's Prompt:

Create a Scavenger Hunt.

Regina's 15 minutes of creative writing:

The mansion crouched on the hill like a bear on a teacup – hulking, awkward, oversized and decidedly threatening. Lola pulled her 1986 Mazda to a stop on the gravel driveway well back from the massive twin doors and peered up at the house through the squeaking, demi-ineffective swish and swipe of her windshield wipers.

“The rain should have stopped by now,” she checked the weather app on her phone. Chance of precipitation 0%. “Dumbass.” She snarled at the phone and tossed it in the back seat, then changed her mind and swiveled around in her seat, lurching to a stop at the end of her seatbelt. Pausing to unlock it, Lola shoved her body between the front two seats and nearly dislocated a shoulder before her fingers slid over the familiar slim weight of her cell phone. She fell back into the driver’s seat with a grunt, dropped the phone in her pocket and stared up at the house again. The wipers gave one last beleaguered squeal, then the right one stuck fast, the left grinding up and down in front of her until she shut off the engine and turned off the headlights.

A knock on her driver's side door window had her reeling back and reaching for the glove compartment where her gun used to sit. “Miss Kentin?” The looming shadow with the knocking hand outside her door knew her name. Lola froze, fingers inches from the glove box and the ghost of the gun no longer in her possession. “It knows my name.” she dared to turn her head. Beyond the glass, a figure stood, dressed all in black, save the crisp white gloves, one poised to knock again on the glass, the other clutching the curved wooden handle of a very old, but very sturdy looking umbrella.

I could do some real damage with an umbrella like that, Lola thought, before her rational mind had her leaning towards the door and peering up into the tight, disapproving face of a man. A human man – not the boogey man.

She had been tough once. What the fuck had happened?

Lola rolled the window down a crack. “What?” Classy Lola, really classy.

“Your host wanted to make sure you made it safely into the house,” the grey faced man said, his voice to polite to fully disclose the distain Lola could sense at her car, her bedraggled appearance, her gruff greeting.

“Mrs. Alexander? So I'm in the right place.”

“Apparently, madame.” Lola could detect a hint of dark humour in the man’s eyes.

Well, then, lead the way Geeves.” Lola grabbed her bag from the front passenger seat, knocking a fistful of candy bar wrappers to the floor in the process.

“Hitchens, madame. My name is Hitchens.”

Lola nodded as she pushed the door open and stepped under the shelter of his massive black umbrella. Hitchens stepped back, putting the umbrella directly over her head, and exposing himself to the driving rain.

“Get under here, man.” Lola grunted, rolling her eyes at his uncomfortable chivalry.

“No thank you, madame.” Hitchens curled his upper lip and Lola got the distinct impression he would rather stand in the rain than share an umbrella with her. Well, fuck him, then.

She shrugged and headed towards the house.
