Today's Prompt:
Write about a heist gone wrong in the most unexpected way.
Regina's 15 minute creative writing:
“Get down! This is a robbery!” A voice as loud and rough as a cement truck echoes around the vaulted marble room. The gunshot that followed shattered the massive blown glass candelabra that lit the room from nearly 20 feet above the polished floor.
Screams echoed around the room as the terrifying bang and the subsequent crash of the glass and metal as it rained to the floor in a cacophony of chaos.
Instinctively, people in the lines, employees at their desks and wickets threw their arms in the air and covered their heads, terrified by the noise and the falling glass. Terror swirled in the room, turning the air dark and electric.
I felt my body fold, my arms fly over my head even before the shot hit the light fixture. I was tucked under the lip of the counter before the glass hit the floor, heart racing, sweat prickling across my skin. I looked toward the noise and saw three huge people, each over six feet tall, dressed all in black with shotguns spreading from the point of that first shot and heading to the front line, vaulting over the counter and heading towards the vault. Time slowed to a crawl as my brain tried to make sense of the madness.
“Why was this happening? Why now? What am I doing here?” Questions swirled in my foggy brain. “I was just trying to get a roll of quarters. This is ridiculous.”
I was quietly in the space between heartbeats, trying to turn back time as the impossible scenario unfolded before me.
Then, all Hell broke loose.
When I entered the bank minutes before, I noticed a giant cage on wheels being pulled in a trolly behind an old man. As the first robber moved towards the counter by the vault, one flap on their cargo pocket caught a latch on the cage, swinging the door wide open.
Like a fever dream, I watched a dozen long-necked white geese waddle from the cage, jumping one by one from the wagon until the space was filled with fairytale white bodies and swivelling heads. When the glass hit the ground, the geese started honking, screaming unearthly noises, hissing, throwing their massive wings open, and flapping frantically as they swarmed the space. Two frightened geese chased the robber, leaping over the counter, biting hard at their tight black pants, latching hard onto the robber’s backside, one cheek each, their honking and hissing replaced with hard flapping, dragging the robber back across the counter as they screamed their surprise and rage.
Time shifted again, thrusting me forward as I watched in horror and awe as a small girl in a pink party dress, disgustingly fluffy crinoline, white ankle socks and mirror shine Mary Janes, turned towards the second robber. He was huge, muscle encased being, looming over the tiny girl, his massive jaw stretching the black balaclava to grey over its expansive width. His giant body cast a shadow as intimidating as the mythical jabberwocky. I watched in horror as the little girl's tiny round face turned a shocking colour of red, her green eyes standing out in stark contrast until she narrowed them with rage. The pink bows in her curling blond pigtails bounced as she stepped away from her cowering mother. The wee creature stepped boldly to the feet of the enormous robber as he strode towards the counter. I opened my mouth to call out a warning to the little girl, but was far too late.
She stepped forward, her little body falling into a suspiciously accomplished fighting stance. “Sensei says yelling is bad,” she declared loudly. The massive man turned his head from side to side, almost as if he considered slowing before almost stepping on her tiny pink form.
I watched her mother -
